DESIGN

Susan Moskop | Managing Editor

  • Senior

  • Digital and Visual Journalism and Visual Communication Double Major

  • From Peoria, IL

  • “As part of both the photography and design courses that worked on this year’s Mosaic, I was able to explore the production both onsite at Leo Catholic High School as well as in Loyola’s design lab. I think all sides of the publication – photo, design and editorial – really bring the magazine full circle for such an important topic such as education in Chicago.”

Layne Hillesland | Creative Director

  • Sophomore

  • Communications Major

  • From Plainfield, IL

  • "A student of famous magazine designer Cipe Pineles once said that 'she didn’t teach style - she taught content. She taught you to start with the content of the magazine and then work from there, rather than just think about what design was going to look nice.' I think this is the perfect mentality when taking on magazine design, especially with a social justice magazine such as Mosaic."

Chelsea Riffe | Online Editor

  • Graduate Student

  • Digital Media & Storytelling Major

  • From Satellite Beach, FL

  • "Designing Mosaic not only brings perspective to how intricate designing a print publication is, but how education in Chicago has so many different pieces. I am honored to be a part of a class that brings the editorial pieces of Mosaic to life with thoughtful content. I have a knack for digital media, so the online portion of the magazine is my way of bringing print to the screen."

  • “Designing Mosaic has given me the chance to learn more about assembling a magazine. After writing stories with the editorial staff, I realized how photos and other graphics help bring a story to life. I look forward to seeing the printed product.”

Elizabeth Griewe | Copy Chief

  • Senior

  • Journalism Major

  • From Batavia, Illinois

  • "Designing a product for print is serious business. Every choice must have an purpose. Each color, comma and caption shows our readers who we are. Taken altogether, we’re send a message: This is important. Mosaic not only gives us a chance to discuss education, but also helps us understand how to design with intent. We’re better designers — and people — for it."

Mosaic is giving me the chance to channel my creativity in a real-world application. Not only do I use my previous knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign, but I’m learning new ways to communicate to an audience through the layout design of pages and the magazine as a whole."

This edition of Mosaic tackles important and pervasive issues of education in the city of Chicago, and as a designer, I hope to enhance and empower the content and stories that are being shared.
